Ruskin Vase

Ruskin pottery owes everything to W. Howson Taylor.
At an early age he decided to gain a reputation as an
art potter. He started in 1898 at an old malthouse
at Smethwick using only local clay and doing everything
by hand. Two great influences moulded his outlook,
an intense admiration of Ruskin and a deep appreciation
of the Chinese pottery of the Sung and Ming periods.
He subscribed completely to Ruskin's view that 'life
without industry is guilt, and industry without art is
brutality'. W. Howson Taylor continued to
produce Ruskin pottery until his death in 1935 but
before he died he destroyed all his papers and potting
materials. Having done so he wrote to a friend 'Why let another
firm make rubbish and call is Ruskin'.
