An artist who gained a considerable reputation as an artist during his lifetime, he is first recorded as living in Halifax, Yorkshire, probably his birthplace.  He moved south in the 1880's to Devon living at various times at Saunton, Coombe Martin and Lynton.
He was elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute.
A prolific exhibitor at many of the principal London galleries including the Royal Academy, London Salon and numerous important provincial galleries, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham etc.
