• Oil on Board, 48x41cm. Arthur Spooner 1873-1962 Provenance: Available on purchase. Arthur Spooner taught landscape and figurative painting at the Nottingham College of Art in the early to mid 1900's. A member of the Royal Society of Artists, he was feted during his lifetime and is one of Nottingham's most famous painters. His earlier work included landscapes, portraits, and figure subjects, but few have survived. Today portraits by Arthur Spooner may sell for five figure sums, but the Goose Fair was bought for much more. In 2004, after a bidding war, Sir Harry Djanogly purchased the painting for £218,050.

    Oil on Canvas, 11x17cm. Arthur White 1865 - 1953 An early member of the St. Ives School, he was born in Sheffield and studied art at the Sheffield School of Art under Henry Archer and J. T. Cook from 1880. He exhibited in London, including at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and in the provinces. Much of his working life was spent in St. Ives and St. Ives itself was the inspiration for much of his work. He was a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists.

    Watercolour, 24x15cm. Arthur Wilde Parsons R.W.A. 1854 - 1931 A well known Bristol landscape and marine painter, he worked in both oil and watercolour. Much of his subject matter was taken from the West Country and Cornwall where he was a regular visitor. He was a regular exhibitor at the London galleries, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, the Royal Society of British Artists etc. He was elected a member of the R.W.A. and lived for much of his life in Rodgate, Bristol.

Augustus Walford Weedon R.I., R.B.A. 1838-1908 Augustus Walford Weedon was born in London and painting in watercolour specialised in landscape subjects, depicting views in England, Scotland and Wales. He is also known to have travelled to Holland where he produced views mostly of canals and waterways. He exhibited extensively in London and provincial galleries, where his works were well received. He was elected to the Society of British Artists in 1883, and to the Royal Institue of Painters in Watercolours in 1887. An Exhibition of his works was held at the Fine Art Society in London in June 1908, and two of his paintings are recorded as hanging in the Melbourne and Sydney Art Galleries in Australia.

    Oil on Canvas, 60x49cm. Augustus William Enness R.B.A. b.1876 An interesting and original painter principally in oils he was born in Whitby in Yorkshire. He moved to London and had a studio in St. John's Wood from 1915. His work was much admired and he exhibited at numerous important galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists. In addition he also exhibited in Scotland at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute.

    Oil on Canvas, 11x8cm. Austin Winterbottom exh. 1887 - 1908 An excellent work by the Sheffield landscape painter Austin Winterbottom. Rarely on the market, this little-known artist was a highly imaginative and skilled painter. He worked almost exclusively in the north of England but exhibited on a number of occasions at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Manchester City Art Gallery.

    Watercolour, 10x7cm. Bartram (Frederick John) Hiles R.W.A. 1872 - 1927 Born in Bristol, the artist lost both his arms at the age of eight in a tram accident. Despite this incredible disability he taught himself to draw and paint holding the brush in his mouth. He attended art classes at the Merchant Venture's Technical college in Bristol and later won a scholarship to the National Art Training School. At the Institution he won several prizes and subsequently visited Paris, returning to London where he worked in decoration and exhibited regularly with the R.B.A. Bartram Hiles had a very successful career in spite of his disability and exhibited at many leading London and provincial galleries. He was elected a member of the Royal West of England Academy and his work was purchased by Queen Victoria.

    Pastel, 53x63cm. Bernard Dunstan R.A., N.E.A.C., R.W.A. b.1920 Born in Middlesex, he is married to the painter Diana Armfield. He studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and then at the Slade.His reputation has owed much to his intimate interiors and nude studies reminiscent of the Degas and Sickert tradition. A much respected painter he has justifiably an enthusiastic following. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1968 and his work is held in important public collections.
  • Watercolour, 77x100cm. Charles Branwhite A.O.W.S. 1817 - 1880 Painted in 1876, this is possibly an exhibition painting by the Bristol painter Charles Branwhite. He was the son of N.C. Branwhite, the painter, and began his career as a sculptor. He studied painting first with his father and then with the celebrated W.J. Muller. A resident of Bristol all his life, he was to become a good friend of two of Bristol's best know painters - Samuel Jackson and Francis Danby. A number of important public collections hold his work, including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Bristol City Art Gallery.

    Oil on Board, 10x7cm. Charles Wellington Furse A.R.A., N.E.A.C., I.S. 1868 - 1904 An exceptional talent, Furse tragically died in his thirties. Responsible for the iconic Edwardian painting 'Diana of the Uplands' which resulted in his being elected an associate of the Royal Academy when it was exhibited at the Academy in 1904. He studied at the Slade under Legros, in Paris at the Academie Julien and then at the Westminster School of Art under Fred Brown. During 1899 - 1901 he worked on the decorative spandrels in Liverpool Town Hall. He visited Italy on two occasions, in 1893 and 1903. Sir Alfred Munnings admired him, saying 'He was a fine painter - he finished just as I began to paint'.

Charles William Wyllie ROI, RBA 1853 - 1923 Charles Wyllie was the younger brother of William Lionel Wyllie and in his youth showed such promise that he had his first painting hung in the Royal Academy at the age of thirteen. He worked both in oil and watercolour and his subjects, though of a shipping nature, tended to be mainly of harbour, river or canal scenes. During World War I he worked as a naval camouflage expert. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, New Watercolour Society, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery and was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters. The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, has two examples of his work and the Tate Gallery has 'Digging for Bait' which was bought by the Chantrey Bequest.

    Watercolour, 43x54cm. Clifford Fishwick 1923-1997 Provenance : Ex private collection. Painter in oil watercolour and gouache, lithographer and mural painter. Fishwick was born on June 21st 1923 at Rising Bridge near Accrington in Lancashire. He studied at Liverpool College of Art from 1940-1942, 1946-1947 and in New York. Fishwick held his first solo exhibition in 1957 at St. George's Gallery, Lancashire and subsequently exhibited widely, including shows at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Artists and the R.W.A. He was a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists and his work is represented in a number of private and public collections. From 1958 to 1984 he was Principal of Exeter College of Art. Most of his works originated from sensations aroused by coast and landscapes and as well as a painter, was an accomplished rock climber and yachtsman.

Clifford Frith was born in London in 1924 where he studied at the Camberwell and St. Martin's School of Art. He emigrated to Australia in 1977. Over the past fifty years he has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Australia, Canada and the UK. He is principally known for his sculptures and has received many public commissions. However, he was no slouch with a brush being a finalist in the Doug Moran Portrait Prize for his portrait of Robyn Archer. Clifford Frith's work is featured in numerous public, corporate and private collections nationally and internationally including the Tate Gallery, London; South London Gallery; Hull Art Gallery; Tel Aviv Art Gallery, Israel; Contemporary Art Society, London; Sussex University; United National Gallery of Australia; Art Gallery of South Australia; Parliament House, Canberra; Fliners University of South Australia; Adelaide Festival Centre; South Australian College of Advanced Education and Adelaide University.
  • Oil on Canvas, 60x50cm. Stone exh.1935- Provenance: Ex private collection. This wonderful painting is very evocative of post war England and beautifully observed. Little is known of this fascinating artist, although we have had work by him in the past. His first recorded address is in Brighton, when in the pre-war years he visited Cornwall and exhibited a number of Cornish paintings at the Royal Academy during this period. Following World War II, he continued to exhibit at the Academy from addresses in Sussex at Rottingdean and Newheaven.

    Oil on Canvas, 14x17cm. Fulton R.S.W.A. 1848 - 1930 Fulton was born in Parkhead near Glasgow, and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He was elected R.S.W. in 1890 and had a long and successful career exhibiting at the London galleries and abroad. He excelled at this type of subject, capturing the landscape of rural Scotland in a sensitive and original manner. He lived and worked for most of his life in Glasgow, exhibiting at both The Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute.
