One of the most influential and respected painters of his period, David Murray was born in Glasgow.
After spending eleven years with a mercantile firm he was to become an artist and studied at the Glasgow School of Art.
In his early years he painted almost exclusively in Scotland before moving to London in 1883.
Following this period he travelled extensively on the continent in particular Italy.
He was knighted in 1918.
